Our verdict

Best months

April–May and September–October offer the best balance of weather, manageable crowds and reasonable prices — avoid mid-April (Design Week) unless that is why you are going.

Think twice about

August — sweltering heat, many local restaurants and shops closed. Fashion Week (Feb & Sep) / Design Week (Apr) — vibrant but hotel prices triple and the city is overwhelmed.

Worth the crowds

Design Week / Salone del Mobile (mid-April): the world's biggest design fair. La Scala opening night (7 Dec, Sant'Ambrogio): Milanese institution. Book 6+ months ahead for either.
